Another wonderful week at Westbourne – from the launch of our very own electric racing car, to inter-house sports competitions, coastline field trips, international karting, and some very spooky Halloween activities across the whole school, this week was action-packed!
Welcome to this week’s round-up of news from our IB Sixth Form, Senior and Prep Schools.

The Westbourne Greenpower Racing Team, led by Year 10 student Caleb, is renovating its very own electric car to race in the Greenpower Formula 24 Series. The Greenpower F24 is part of the Greenpower Education Trust, a UK-based charity which inspires young people around the world to excel in STEM through a unique challenge: to design, build and race an electric car! This is a fantastic opportunity not only sparking engagement with STEM through the excitement of motorsport, but that also highlights the importance of working to achieve a greener, more sustainable future. The team is currently looking for sponsorship to make their dream a reality and race the car at Mallory Park on 24th April 2024.
IB1 Geography students enjoyed a fascinating field trip to the River Ewenny on Wednesday, relishing the opportunity to apply the theory they have learnt in the classroom out in the field. Students collected data for their coursework in order to analyse the characteristics of the river and how they vary between its upper and lower course, deciphering if the river fits into the Bradshaw Model. They finished off a brilliant day at Merthyr Mawr sand dunes and Southerndown beach. What better way to understand theory than putting it into practice!

It’s that time of year again when the air turns crisp and the leaves start to fall. But it’s not just the changing of the seasons that’s got everyone on edge…students have had a terror-rific time this week getting into the spooky spirit of Halloween! Senior School students have embraced the theme head on with some ghastly fancy dress, a freaky form class decorating competition, a game of El ladron de monstrous (Steal the Monster) in Spanish, and a Middle Years production of ‘Thriller’!!
Tom, Year 11, travelled to Milan earlier this week to compete in the prestigious Easy Kart International Grand Finals this Sunday. Unbelievably, he has only been competing in outdoor karting for one season after enjoying great success in indoor karting. Qualifying for such a prestigious championship is a fantastic achievement. Tom will represent the BirelArt team and compete against top drivers from across the world. After three intense days of practice sessions, Tom will complete a qualifying session on Saturday leading up to the big race on Sunday. We are confident Tom will hold his own amongst world-class drivers and wish him all the best on race day. Well done!
Year 3 pupils have been learning all about the skeleton in science this term. This week’s lesson focused on how muscles and joints help our bodies move. The children completed a hands-on task in which they made their own ball and socket joints using disposable cups, rubber balls and dowel rods, enabling them to clearly see how the ball and socket joint allows the bone to move in certain directions. Great job!
This week saw pupils from across the Prep School take to the football pitch for an Inter-House Football Tournament. Not only do these matches offer children the opportunity to play against their peers in different year groups, they also foster a healthy sense of competition and camaraderie! On Thursday, Year 3 and 4 pupils competed in a fun-filled and exciting game that saw Dafydd crowned the winning house with a fantastic 20 House Points! Well done to all the students involved for your resilience and sportsmanship.

Year 2 pupils have been learning about the fascinating history of communication across different time periods and cultures. The children learnt about some of the traditional communication methods used by Aboriginal Peoples in Australia and even made their own message sticks using cardboard and different symbols.
Prep pupils have had a frighteningly-fun time this week getting into the spooky spirit of Halloween.. The children have been engaging in Halloween-themed activities, including pumpkin painting in Reception and some excellent ghost painting by Art Club pupils. The children focused on using different painting techniques to blend the colours in their paintings to create an especially eerie effect.
