Year 11 student, Tom, has been putting the summer holidays to fantastic use by taking on some high-octane work experience that is sure to give him a head start in the future.
Tom has spent a week at Alpine F1, beating off around 400 applications to be chosen to take part. He is one of only six students to have made it through the competitive applications round.
With a deep-rooted passion for motorsports, Tom’s talent in the field has been clear for some time. He seized the initiative to create the Go-Karting Team here at Westbourne and last year led them to qualify as one of the top 10 teams in the UK.
“I applied for work experience at the Alpine F1 team. They told me about 400 people applied. I was one of six selected! I’m working in the composites department, learning how they make the carbon fibre body and chassis of the car using moulds and computer logic, plus how the downforce and aerodynamics work and what is needed.” Year 11 student, Tom
Tom’s experiences at the Alpine F1 centre in Enstone in the Cotswolds have provided incredible insight into the work that goes on behind the scenes, including shaping a stand-out team.
In addition to learning top tips and new manoeuvres for track success, the experience has highlighted the importance of developing core skills including communication, resilience and teamworking, as well as STEM knowledge – all skills we nurture at the school.
Congratulations, Tom, on securing such a unique opportunity – we can’t wait to hear all about it on your return to school in September!
