Academic debate and collaboration across three continents.
Posted: 29th December 2024
This week, 27 IB Diploma students from Westbourne schools around the globe took part in the inaugural Westbourne Global Debate. Students debated STEM & Business topics in real-time across time zones in teams of three, with one student from each school (Penarth, Sydney and Singapore) collaborating to form each team.
Led by Mr Stephen Powell, esteemed Business teacher from our UK school, and UK Head Pupil, Illia, who supported the smooth running of the event, the debate brought together the very best and brightest STEM & Business students from across the world.
Particular acknowledgement must go to our Penarth cohort, who braved the frosty early morning temperatures to take part alongside their global peers.
A variety of challenging STEM & Business topics formed the core of the debate, with wider global questions thrown in to encourage the students to think outside of the box, such as, ‘Should chewing gum be banned globally?’ and ‘Should there be a universal timezone?’
This first Global Debate was designed to introduce more students to debating, furnishing them with the skills to be able to compete in international competitions, whilst strengthening academic ties between our global student community. We are planning many more initiatives in the months to come. Watch this space!
