Future leaders will need more than strong academic qualifications; they’ll need curiosity, adaptability, entrepreneurial thinking and the confidence to lead in an increasingly connected world.
At Westbourne School, preparing students for that future is woven into the educational experience, combining academic excellence with real-world insight and global opportunities. Vice Principal and Business teacher, Stephen Powell, plays a key role in shaping that approach. Here, he shares how initiatives such as Future Leaders Lab and the new Industry Speakers series are giving students the knowledge, skills and mindset to succeed in the industries of tomorrow.
Why are business and economics more important than ever for young people today?
With youth unemployment rising and ever growing uncertainty around what future jobs will look like, it is important that students have the knowledge to allow them to take an entrepreneurial approach if they wish, but also that they understand the influence that economics has on the business environment. Personally I would recommend all students to study either business or economics for either their GCSE or sixth form studies.
At Westbourne, what does preparing students for the careers of the future actually look like?
This question is impossible to answer briefly as our whole curriculum revolves around developing future leaders ready for an AI-enabled world. Students’ experience of business in the prep school and middle years is centred around developing their enterprise skills. These skills are not just delivered in business, they are delivered right across all subject areas.
The careers our students will enter are changing rapidly. What skills do you believe will matter most in the leaders of tomorrow?
Adaptability and resilience. We don’t know what tomorrow looks like. With the geo-political climate as it is and the AI race continuing I believe that being dynamic and being able to get back up again after a set back will be key to succeeding. In addition, just being a genuinely nice person who helps others will help!
Future Leaders Lab has become one of Westbourne’s signature programmes. What makes this experience so unique, and what do students gain from taking part?
Future Leaders Lab is a truly immersive experience delivered in a similar way to a Master’s Level course. Students are not treated as teenagers, they are given the respect and level of teaching of a Master’s student.
The course is intense with very tangible targets and is aimed at those who really do aspire to be global leaders. It’s a truly unique, pivotal part of a Westbourne Senior and Sixth Form education and we encourage all students to embrace the global opportunities and benefits it offers.
