What do we mean by Middle Years?

Years 6–8 are critical years in any child’s academic journey. These “Middle Years”, as we call them at Westbourne, are an exciting time of discovery, growing ambition and new possibilities. At Westbourne, we want students to make the most of every opportunity, building academic strength, exploring their interests and discovering what they are capable of.

Our Middle Years take a different approach to progression. Rather than assuming every student should learn at the same pace, we look at individual strengths and readiness to create a pathway that offers the right level of challenge, at the right time.

Across Middle Years 1, 2 and 3, each stage has a clear purpose, helping students build on their strengths, develop new skills and progress with confidence.

Learning designed around the learner

Personalised Placement

Students are placed according to readiness rather than chronology. STEM stage provides the core reference point, supported by English admissions evidence and CEM testing, so each learner begins where they can thrive.

Accelerated Opportunity

Highly able students can access an accelerated GCSE pathway, including consideration of early entry in subjects such as Mathematics and Languages. Year 8 students may progress into Year 9 and begin GCSE study early when it is academically and pastorally appropriate.

Where ambition meets pastoral care

We are committed to offering the right challenge and the right support, at the right time.

Students joining at chronological Year 6 age are placed in the stream best matched to their academic ability. To protect social development, belonging and pastoral continuity, they ordinarily spend at least two years within the Middle Years programme. Placement for students of Year 7 or Year 8 age is considered individually, according to ability and readiness.

Rather than relying on age alone, placement into our Middle Years year groups reflects each student’s readiness, using STEM ability, English admissions evidence and CEM assessment to ensure they are appropriately challenged and supported.

For highly able students, an accelerated GCSE pathway offers opportunities to progress faster, including starting subjects such as Mathematics and Languages early. This gives families a more flexible route from Middle Years into GCSEs and beyond, helping students build on their strengths, fulfil their academic potential and prepare for future university and career opportunities.
